Honkai Star Rail F2P Team Building: Best Free Units

Building a championship-caliber roster in Honkai Star Rail without spending a cent is absolutely doable — you just need to know which free characters deserve your resources and which ones to skip.

Start With the Free 5-Stars the Story Already Gives You

The best gacha in Honkai Star Rail is the story itself. As you clear the Herta Space Station and the Xianzhou arcs, the game hands you two permanent 5-stars for free — Himeko and Welt — with no pulls, no luck, and no regret. These two are worth building the moment you get them.

Himeko (Fire, Erudition) is your early AoE monster. Her follow-up attacks trigger whenever an enemy’s Weakness is Broken, so she carries Simulated Universe runs and any fight packed with adds. Hand her the free “The Seriousness of Breakfast” light cone from the Herta store and she deletes trash mobs before your main DPS even acts.

Welt (Imaginary, Nihility) is slower but sticky and disruptive — his skill slows enemies and his ultimate can Imprison them, delaying their turns. That crowd control is genuinely clutch in early Forgotten Hall and against fast bosses. Because both are guaranteed, prioritize their traces and relics before chasing anything from a limited banner.

Trailblazer Is Your Most Flexible Free Slot

Your main character, the Trailblazer, is the most cost-efficient unit in the game because you can switch their Path for free at any Space Anchor. One built character can cover multiple roles depending on the team you’re running that day.

For most F2P accounts, the standout is the Harmony Trailblazer (Imaginary), unlocked on Penacony. It enables Super Break, converting your team’s Break Effect into bonus damage every time you hit a Weakness-Broken enemy. Paired with any Break-focused support, it turns a budget lineup into a serious damage machine and is arguably the best free support in the game.

The Fire Preservation Trailblazer is your fallback tank, since their ultimate shields the whole party and solves the “I have no sustain” problem that wrecks new accounts. If you haven’t pulled a healer yet, this Path keeps squishy carries alive through Memory of Chaos.

My advice: pick the single Path your current team needs most and fully level its traces rather than spreading materials across every version. The flexibility is there when your roster grows — it’s not a reason to half-build three Trailblazers at once.

The 4-Star Backbone That Carries Every F2P Team

Honkai Star Rail’s worst-kept secret is that 4-stars do most of the heavy lifting, and you’ll naturally stockpile them just by pulling on any banner. The support 4-stars in particular are where your resources belong, because a great buffer makes a mediocre DPS look elite.

Tingyun (Lightning, Harmony) is the crown jewel — she boosts a single ally’s ATK, grants bonus damage, and refunds energy so your carry ultimates far more often. Pela (Ice, Nihility) shreds enemy DEF for the whole team while applying crowd control, helping literally any damage dealer. Both are common pulls, and both deserve full traces.

For sustain, March 7th (Ice, Preservation) is the shielder you already own from the tutorial, and Natasha (Physical, Abundance) is a free story healer who keeps you topped off through long runs. Neither is flashy, but a team that doesn’t die clears content a glass-cannon lineup simply can’t.

Round things out with the freebies from Simulated Universe’s Herta store and login events: Herta (Ice, Erudition), Asta (Fire, Harmony — a fantastic Speed and ATK buffer), and Serval (Lightning, Erudition) for AoE. Grab them, level them, and you’ll have Weakness coverage for almost every enemy type without spending a single pull.

Invest Deep in One Team Before Spreading Thin

The biggest mistake F2P players make is leveling ten characters to 40 instead of four characters to 80. Your Trailblaze Power — the daily stamina that gates relic and material farming — is your real bottleneck, not Stellar Jade. Spread it too thin and nothing hits hard enough for the endgame.

Pick one core team of four and commit: a main DPS, one or two supports, and a sustain unit. Push their levels, ascend their traces (skills matter far more than raw level), and only then start a second team built around a different element to satisfy Weakness requirements in Memory of Chaos and Pure Fiction.

Relics are the long grind, so farm the one Cavern that drops the two sets your carry actually wants and ignore the rest until that’s done. Prioritize correct main stats — an ATK% or DMG% body, matching boots — over chasing perfect substats early. “Good enough” relics on the right piece beat “perfect” ones in the wrong slot.

Don’t sleep on Energy Regeneration and Speed, either. Hitting a Speed breakpoint (often around 134 or 160, depending on the unit) can mean an extra turn per cycle, and an Energy Rope on a support means one more team-wide buff per fight. These tweaks cost zero Jade and frequently matter more than another Eidolon.

Fund Your Pulls the Honest Way — and Skip the “Generators”

Stellar Jade adds up faster than people admit if you actually claim everything. Daily training missions, the Nameless Honor free track, Simulated and Divergent Universe rewards, and especially event stores all pour Jade into your account. A single patch’s events routinely hand out enough for 20 to 40 pulls if you finish them.

Two sources F2P players skip: redemption codes and login campaigns. HoYoverse drops free codes during every version livestream — redeem them within their window on the official site for instant Jade and materials. Meanwhile, Gift of Odyssey and similar login events quietly stack up hundreds of Jade over a few weeks for doing nothing but showing up.

If you want the cheap Express Supply Pass without touching your own wallet, legit reward apps are the honest route. Google Opinion Rewards pays Play Store credit for short surveys, and Mistplay rewards you for playing games; bank that credit and buy the pass on Google’s dime. What you should never touch are “Stellar Jade generators,” modded APKs, or sites promising unlimited free currency — your Jade lives on HoYoverse’s servers, so no tool can add it. Those sites only phish your login, install malware, or get your account permanently banned.
